Baptism

An Introduction to Gifts Ideas for Baptism
Baptism is a Christian ceremony where a person will be washed off of their original sin that was passed down by the first people – Adam and Eve – so they can start off on a clean slate to receive God’s teaching. Most Christian parents would have their babies baptised so that they can start off cleansed. As it is a joyous ceremony, people do give baptism gifts as well. Here are some of the common ones.
A Christening bib can be one of the best gifts. As babies tend to feed frequently, it is unavoidable that spillage accidents may occur. All dressed well in white, a bib can avoid the clothing to get stained. Simply remove and it is as good as new. Christening bibs usually come in white or ivory colour, and is simple for boys, but frilly for girls. Find one that will suit the child.
On the other hand, one can give a photo frame with biblical quote. Whether it holds one, two or three pictures, this is a good way to keep the memory of the ceremony. They can come in any shapes or sizes, some even embedded with the child’s name and date of baptism. If you are giving a belated present, you can always present it with the photo ready in place.
A cross pendant can also be a sweet gift. Regardless of the gender, cross pendants go with anyone. You can consider engraving the child’s name or initials to indicate that it was specially made for them. Find one that is not too heavy or flimsy, because it may cause discomfort to the child, or they may break it easily.
Last but not least, you can get a starter prayer book as a gift. Of course, a baby cannot read yet, but their parents can. Early exposure to prayer will teach the child to grow in faith, and learn to form their own prayers over time. Write behind the cover of the first page of the book after the cover who the present is for, on what occasion, from who, and the date. It is like receiving a card they will never lose.

Permit me to call to mind what I have omitted above, lest I seem to break off the train of impending thoughts in the middle. There is to us one, and but one, baptism; as well according to the Lord’s gospel 11] as according to the apostle’s letters, 12] inasmuch as he says, "One God, and one baptism, and one church in the heavens." |

”Old Put” The Patriot $0.99 This is the life story of one who was born on a farm, and died on a farm, yet who achieved a world-wide fame through his military exploits. It has been told many times, it will be told for centuries yet to come; for the world loves a man of high emprise, and such was Israel Putnam, the hero of this story. He was born January 7, 1718, in Danvers, then known as Salem Village, Province of Massachusetts Bay, in New England. His father’s Christian name was Joseph, his mother’s Elizabeth, and Israel (as he was called at baptism, after his maternal grandfather, Israel Porter) was the great-grandson of his first American ancestor, John Putnam, who had come from England, where the original name of the family was Puttenham. He had settled at Salem more than eighty years before, and his son, Thomas, built, in 1648, the house in which Israel was born in 1718. On the death of Thomas it had become the property of Joseph, who first occupied it in 1690, after his marriage to Elizabeth Porter. |

”What are the things that set your soul on fire?”: Charles Finney’s approach to emotion in worship. $49.99 Charles Finney is often viewed by liturgical scholars as being the forefather of the modern megachurch, developing scientific tools designed to increase the likelihood of conversion in his hearers. In the view of these scholars, Finney was primarily as a pragmatist; worse, in the minds of some, he was an emotionally manipulative pragmatist. Yet such a reading overlooks Finney’s complex approach to emotion. This dissertation examines Finney’s “emotionology,” or his beliefs about the proper expression of emotion. When a will properly aligned with God turned its attention to truth about God, Finney believed an emotional response necessarily occurred. A range of emotions occurred naturally to a godly worshiper: abhorrence of sin and agony, as well as joy and peace of mind. Finney believed that revivalists who sought to manipulate the emotions directly were doomed to failure, for emotions were properly speaking not causes of change but effects of truth on a rightly aligned will and intellect.;This dissertation takes a sweeping look at how this emotionology was reflected throughout the whole range of worship practices which Finney planned. Attention is given to Finney’s rhetorical techniques and use of Scripture in preaching, his practice of holding public prayer meetings, his approach to liturgical space, and his understanding of baptism and the Lord’s Supper. The work concludes by re-examining the link between Finney and the pragmatism and the modern megachurch; while Finney would applaud the scientific approach of many megachurches, he likely would eschew their focus on making the listener comfortable in order to encourage her to make a decision to follow Jesus. The work concludes by examining other potential liturgical heirs of Finney’s legacy, including worship planners who practice “primal leadership,” Daniel Goleman’s term for emotionally intelligent leadership which recognizes the ways that emotions hold the key to people’s willingness to change. |

”Words that hurt, words that heal” United Methodist worship and gender language 1972-1992. $49.99 In nineteen-sixty-eight, the Methodist Church and Evangelical United Brethren Church merged to form the United Methodist Church. With the inception of this new denomination came the opportunity for liturgical reform. The newly formed denomination established a Commission on Worship that broke ground theologically and ecumenically, developing alternate texts for the sacraments and rites of Christian worship. Concurrently, in the late 1960s feminist theologians challenged the patriarchal constructs of religion, focusing on the prevalence and injustice of sexist language. Awareness and advocacy for change in gender language was the product of the Inclusive Language Movement, which greatly influenced the development of the United Methodist liturgical texts.;This dissertation addresses the historical development of these rites converging on the intersection of the Inclusive Language Movement and liturgy in United Methodist rites of Word and Table, Baptism, and Ordination from 1972 to 1992. The evaluation of the rites is guided by the gender analysis methodology of Marjorie Procter-Smith, comparative liturgy methodology of Anton Baumstark interpreted by Robert Taft, and the literary critical method of Joyce Ann Zimmerman. The primary focus of the dissertation is on the linguistic textual patterns signifying humanity, Jesus, God, and the Trinity. Analysis of the pedagogical rubrics and textual content points to a pattern of acceptance, resistance and revision of gender language and imagery in these texts. This pattern further identifies a constructed essentialism of Trinitarian language employed in these liturgical texts. The dissertation concludes with specific recommendations as well as rationale for increased use of emancipatory language in United Methodist worship. The primary texts sources used are the available drafts of the texts, committee and board minutes, correspondence, published editions of the texts, and personal interviews. The dissertation includes an |

Excerpt: The Christian movement known as the Penitents goes back to the 4 century. Those who had committed serious sins confessed their sins to the bishop or his representative and were assigned a penance that was to be carried out over a period of time. After completing their penance, they were reconciled by the bishop with a prayer of absolution offered in the midst of the community. Penance assumed many forms, such as pilgrimages to holy sites; constructing, repairing and rebuilding churches; and caring for the poor and sick. During the time they worked out their penances, the penitents often had special places in church and wore special garments to indicate their status. Like the catechumens who were preparing for baptism, they were often dismissed from the Sunday assembly after the Liturgy of the Word. The use of ashes at the beginning of Lent is an extension of the use of ashes with those entering the Order of Penitents. Penance, in the Judeo-Christian sense can be traced to the time just after the Jewish exile in Babylon (Sirach 5:1-8; 34: 21-31). The repentance and conversion preached by John the Baptist was of this type. In the first centuries of the Christian Church, groups of penitents were established by the Church for those Christians who fell into grave sin and sought reconciliation with the Church. These sins included such things as adultery, murder, idolatry and magic, and theft. Doing penance was a visible sign of conversion. If the sinner refused to do penance, he or she was excommunicated. Public penance consisted of acts of mortification such as wearing a “hair shirt,” covering the head with ashes, fasting and prayers. These acts were regulated by the bishops. After the period of penance was completed, the repentant sinner was rea… More: |

It was built, probably on the site of an earlier fort, by Sir George Crichton in the 1440s. It is housed in the Uffizi of Florence .The Adoration of the Magi theme was popular in the Renaissance Florence. The work was commissioned by Gaspare di Zanobi del Lama, a banker of dubious origins and morality connected to the House of Medici , for his chapel in the church of Santa Maria Novella (now destroyed). In the scene are present numerous characters among which are several members of the Medici family: Cosimo de’ Medici (the Magus kneeling in front of the Virgin, described by Vasari as “the finest of all that are now extant for its life and vigour”), his sons Piero (the second Magus kneeling in the centre with the red mantle) and Giovanni (the third Magus), and his grandsons Giuliano and Lorenzo . The three Medici portrayed as Magi were all dead at the time the picture was painted, and Florence was effectively ruled by Lorenzo. In his Lives Vasari describes the Adoration in the following way:The beauty of the heads in this scene is |

Source: Wikipedia. Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Archbishop of CanterburyRowan WilliamsPrimates’ MeetingLambeth ConferencesAnglican Consultative CouncilBishops, Dioceses, andEpiscopal polity The Book of Common Prayer is the common title of a number of prayer books of the Church of England and of other Anglican churches, used throughout the Anglican Communion. The first book, published in 1549 (Church of England 1957), in the reign of Edward VI, was a product of the English Reformation following the break with Rome. Prayer books, unlike books of prayers, contain the words of structured (or liturgical) services of worship. The work of 1549 was the first prayer book to contain the forms of service for daily and Sunday worship in English and to do so within a single volume; it included morning prayer, evening prayer, the Litany, and Holy Communion. The book included the other occasional services in full: the orders for baptism, confirmation, marriage, ‘prayers to be said with the sick’ and a funeral service. It set out in full the Epistle and Gospel readings for the Sunday Communion Service. Set Old Testament and New Testament readings for daily prayer were specified in tabular format as were the set Psalms; and canticles, mostly biblical, that were provided to be sung between the readings (Careless 2003, p. 26). The 1549 book was rapidly succeeded by a reformed revision in 1552 under the same editorial hand, that of Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury. It never came into use because, on the death of Edward VI, his half-sister Mary I restored Roman Catholic worship. On her death, a compromise version, largely 1552 with a few amendments from 1549, was published in 1559. Following the tumultuous events leading to and including the English |

1833 Works $21.18 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The “Word of Wisdom” is the common name of a section of the Doctrine and Covenants, a book considered by many churches within the Latter Day Saint movement to consist of revelations from God. It is also the name of a health code based on this scripture, practiced most strictly by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), and to a lesser extent, some other Latter Day Saint denominations. In the LDS Church, compliance with the Word of Wisdom is currently a prerequisite for baptism, service in missionary work, attendance at church schools, and entry into the church’s temples; however, violation of the code is not considered to be grounds for excommunication or other disciplinary action. The scripture discourages “hot drinks”, the non-medicinal use of tobacco, the consumption of wine (excluding sacramental wine) or “strong drinks”, and the consumption of meat, except sparing use only in time of winter or famine. The scripture also recommends the consumption of herbs, fruits, and grains, as well as grain-based “mild drinks”. As practiced by the LDS Church, there is no firm restriction relating to meat consumption, but there are additional restrictions against narcotics, and all alcoholic beverages are forbidden, including “mild drinks” such as beer. The LDS Church interprets “hot drinks” to mean coffee and tea (except herbal tea). According to Joseph Smith, Jr., the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement, the Word of Wisdom was received in 1833 as a revelation from God. After Smith’s death, Brigham Young stated that the revelation was given in response to problems encountered while conducting meetings in the Smith family home: “When they assembled together in this room after breakfast, the first they did was to light their pi… More: |
